Best Dirt Bike Tracks Utah

Some riders buy a dirt bike so it looks shiny in the garage. The more sane among us buy one to be ridden and get scratched through the occasional crash. We hope you’re in the later category.

Life is just too short to mess around and watch yet another dirt bike rider ripping it up on YouTube. To get professional like them takes hours and hours of practice, so get out there and find a spot!

Here are Utah’s best dirt bike tracks worth exploring:

1. Hook and Ladder OHV Trails

With more than 40 miles of marked and rated dirt bike trails at your disposal, you’ll be more than satisfied here. It’s out at La Sal in Utah with dry conditions which are open year-round. Aim for Spring or Fall as winter is too cold and summer is well….absolutely hot!

2. Yellowstone ATV Trail

Here is where you’ll find two very long trail loops which interconnect. They are well marked for grades and maintained during the year. This is within Ashley National Forest and you’ll find spots to camp and launch a boat at Moon Lake. Maybe not swim though as the water can be very very cold.

3. Ticaboo Trails Utah

Stay at Ticaboo Resort where you’ll get immediate access to hundreds of awesome trails to explore. You’ll probably need to stay 2 nights to see them all! And once you do, hire a boat or kayak to see the region by floating along. RV’s welcome here with a restaurant on site and cabins for those who prefer glamping.

4. Throttle 215 MX Park

Yes motocross riders, we haven’t forgotten you! MX tracks are plentiful across Utah with our favorite going towards Throttle 215 MX Park. With both a main track for the parents and a PeeWee track for the kids, the whole family will be well served. The track is very well maintained by the operators with the occasional competition being held here.

5. Casto Canyon Trail

There is plenty to discover at the Casto Canyon Trail. People haul their dirt bikes from all over Utah to check this one out given how epic the scenery is with plenty of red hoodoos and cliffs everywhere. You can’t camp here though there is a campsite a few miles down the road.

6. Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

For those that love the super soft sand dunes, then this is for you. Full throttle and lean it back! When you’ve had enough of sand riding, whip out the sand board and ride your way down these dunes. You can ride at nighttime as well as camp here in one of the few camp sites, though facilities are almost non-existent.

7. Doc’s Beach

If you like the sandy stuff but don’t want to chase the big dunes at Coral Pink, then you’ll love Doc’s Beach which is popular with Utah residents as well as those out of state. There isn’t much else but sand, sand and more sand! You can camp here though the facilities are limited.

8. Dome Plateau Utah

When you’re done with the sandy tracks, then get along to Dome Plateau. This is more hard-packed with rocky outcrop sections and some soft stuff too, but nothing like a sandy beach. The views here are pretty epic and you’ll come across some large caves and old mining sites on your journey. Head to Dewey Bridge where you’ll find a small campground which operates on a first come, first served basis.

9. Knolls OHV Area

For the biggest dirt bike riding precinct in the state, it’s Knolls OHV Area that you’ll want to head to. Here is where you’ll get yourself into 36,000 acres of sand dunes, hills, trails and everything in between. It’s out at West Wendover and near the famous Bonneville Salt Flats and while it’s remote, it’s also popuar on weekends so don’t be surprised if you see others.

10. Mineral Fork Trail

Those living in Salt Lake City would’ve heard of this dirt bike track. It’s not much in length but makes for an easy trip from the city paired with some green lush vegetation as a good alternative to the desert landscape. This is within the Uinta National Forest with some single track available.

11. Paiute ATV Trail System

We’ve left one of the best spots until last! Imagine more than 2,000 interconnecting ATV Trails and you’ve got hte Paiute ATV Trail System. Some riders go for 20 or 30 trips here and still haven’t been on all the tracks yet! So much to explore and so little time, but one thing is for sure – you’ll never get sick of this.

12. Richard’s Hollow

Head up to the North-Eastern side of the state and you’ll find some great single track for your dirt bike. The Friendship and Spring Campgrounds provide direct track access which the Lodge Campground gives access to the nearby Steel Hollow Trail which is equally as good, if not better.

13. River House Ruins

Ever wanted to ride in the dry river bed? Well now you can! Through the River House Ruins, you simply follow the San Juan River. There is an old abandoned ranch here which gives a biit of a creepy vibe to the whole place. Sometimes you’ll feel like you’re being watched. No coincidence that we’ve put this as #13 on the list, right?!

14. Strawberry OHV Trail System

Less creep than River House Ruins? Check. Plenty of trails? Check. Camping? Check. Boat ramps and fishing? Check. At Strawberry OHV Trail System, you’ve got plenty to explore which makes for the perfect weekend getaway.

15. Sand Flats Recreation Area

Leaving of the best until last is the Sand Flats Recreation Area. This place is almost world famous and offers riders and explorers a lot of places to discover. Not only is the riding great here but so is the camping with 120 camp sites available across 2 seperate camp grounds. If you need to wash off all that smell then head along to the Mill Creek Canyon swimming hole.

Way too many people hide inside when the weather isn’t good, yet that’s the best time to ride. You’ll avoid the crowds and have most of these places to yourself.

Best Dirt Bike Tracks South Dakota

While the state doesn’t have that many right areas to choose from, there is still enough to keep you entertained and not needing to haul your dirt bike out of state. Plus with some of them you can camp overnight with excellent facilities on hand.

The best dirt bike trails in South Dakota are:

1. Black Hills National Forest

The most popular ride spot is Black Hills National Forest where there are many miles of riding trails to choose from. You’ll need a permit first from the Black Hills National Forest Ranger Station and then you’re ready to see everything here from hill climbs to muddy bog holes and everything in between.

When the sun starts to go down early (as it does in the forest), it’s time to find a good campground. Fortunately, there are several you can choose from including Boxelder Forks, Foubaix Lake and Dalton Lake. Some people pick a new spot each night while throwing their camping gear in pannier bags. RV’s are also welcome at Nemo Guest Ranch, Mystic Hills Campground and Trailside Park Resort.

2. Tailside Park Resort

We love dirt bike resorts and Trailside Park is just excellent. Pay the nominal fee and you’ll have more than 500 miles of trails to explore. This is why you’ve got to bring an extra fuel can or two as there isn’t any fuel on site. Many people choose Tailside as a spot to base themselves before exploring the Black Hills National Forest and Summit Peak.

The campground is quite modern with almost 40 RV sites to choose from plus numerous tent sites and some really nice lokoing cabins which you can rent. This is super close to Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument with restaurants and shopping, yet you’ll still feel like you’re a million miles away.

3. Talsmas Trail Park

Talsmas Trail Park has a good reputation for just being simple at the core. It’s only open during the weekend though if you have a group of riders together, they’ll actually let you ride mid-week. This is ideal as you’ll avoid the crowds. It’s best to make reservations for the camping facilities and there are toilets available but no showers unfortunately.

4. Shanks Quarry

Shanks Quarry doesn’t have that much to see but if you’re already in the Black Hills National Forest, then drop by here if you have registration on your dirt bike. It’s a hard packed area which is good because it doesn’t get too muddy after it rains. The terrain is pretty easy going so ideal for beginners.

5. Oahe Downstream OHV Area

Oahe isn’t the biggest off highway vehicle area but it’s certainly open to dirt bikes with their own motocross track. The Central States Racing Association maintains this area and it’s free to ride here anytime. Unfortunately there isn’t any camping facilities on site but still, it’s a free place to ride dirt bikes. Who’s complaining?

6. Baja ORV Area

If you’re not into the forests and mountains, then go for Baja ORV Area within Buffalo Gap National Grasslands. This is a very dry area where you might even see triple digits on the speedometer. This place gets muddy so avoid for several days after each rain event. You can camp here which many people do and there are almost 500 acres to explore.

Right! No excuses now! Clearly there are some damn fine riding areas around the State of South Dakota. We know the local counties are looking at opening up more riding trails in the future since the industry is growing year on year.

With most of these places, they are just much more fun with a group of people instead of doing it solo. Those who ride on their own are typically the ADV or dual-sport riders looking for some solitude. It’s safer to ride together as a group if you’re a dirt bike enthusiasts and you’ll find fellow riders in the local Facebook meetup groups.

Baltimore City and its County, as well as Maryland State, offers some really great dirt bike riding trails worth exploring.

Best Places to Ride Dirt Bikes near Baltimore

Coming up with this list wasn’t easy. We had to scour the internet for up-to-date information about where you could go riding. Some sites actually forced you to pay for this data which didn’t sit right with us.

Here are the best dirt bike trails near Baltimore:

1. Wolf Den Run State Park

Definitnely the best place to go riding on your dirt bike is Wolf Den Run State Park. This is about 3 hours out of town by the West Virginia border near the Savage River State Forest. Is it worth the trip? Absolutely. Bring your camping gear and make an epic weekend out of this journey.

You’ll find a motocross track, hill climbs and open areas in which to learn. Hundreds of acres here and you can bring your 4×4 too for some fun thrills and spills. You should get yourself a reservation first to avoid disappointment, especially on weekends when it becomes very busy. This is only open in the warmer months.

2. Garrett Trail System

If you’re not up for traveling that far, then the Garrett Trail System is enough. This is an old logging road which has been transformed into an offroad vehicle trail. It’s better for dual sport and those who enjoy adventure motorcycling more than dirt bike riders, given it’s mostly hard packed gravel.

3. Budds Creek Motocross Park

Head out towards Mechanicsville in Maryland and you’ll come across the Budds Creek Motocross Park. This is an epic natural terrain track which is well maintained. If you’re not up for riding here then come along to one of their regular championship races given the complex can hold up to 20,000 people. A really epic area and the track is long flowing.

4. Piney Mountain Trail System

There isn’t much of a trail here. We’re talking 2 miles of a gravel road through native hardwood forests. Still worth riding? Sure – if you’re in the area. Mostly you’ll come across dual-sport riders looking for a stealth camping spot here rather than actual weekend warriors.

5. Meadow Mountain Trail System

Another small spot out towards Grantsville is the Meadow Mountain Trail System. Some dirt bike riders go here with their bikes to share in what is quite a short trail system. Some 4×4’s also come here so look out for other riders when you’re in the area.

6. Shady Acres Motocross, Maryland

Another great MX track is Shady Acres over in Friendsville. The track is designed for intermediate riders and kids are welcome here. There is a seperate PeeWee track and then run the occasional race here worth watching.

7. Wicomico Motorsports Park

We’ve actually left the best until last on this list! Yep, lucky #7 goes to Wicomico Motorsports Park which offers miles and miles of great dirt bike riding tracks for the enduro folk. Kids are also welcomed here with their own seperate and closed off riding area, while ATV’s also use these tracks. This place gets popular on weekends and you’ll need to pay a nominal entrance fee.

Getting Started Today

There we have it! Some really exciting places in which to go exploring on 2 wheels. Why not make a weekend of it all and go camping too. Bring the entire family as it’s a great segway into the sport.

There are some spots that you simply can’t ride dirt bikes. These include Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and the Cedarville State Forest. Always check with local authorities as to their status on these riding places. Some spots can be closed due to fire dangers, excess snow or seasonal bear behavior.

You can also consider heading out for a decent-length trip. Going out of state will yield some great riding destinations. Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia aren’t too far away and worth hauling your dirt bikes to really get somewhere decent to ride.
