Does My Dirt Bike Legally Need Mirrors?

So you’re riding out there on the trails and are curious if your dirt bike requires mirrors? Aren’t you breaking the law without them?

Fortunately, you’re safe! Rules and regulations vary from states and juristrictions, but generally speaking:

You don’t need mirrors to ride a dirt bike offroad and on private property. You will legally require having dirt bike mirrors fitted if riding on government or council land, however, in offroad areas, most police take a blind eye to the issue. For the MX rider who rides on closed circuits, mirrors are never needed.

Some dirt bikes don’t actually have the mounts for mirrors so you’ll need to buy these seperately.

Legally Riding without Dirt Bike Mirrors

Most riders actually don’t ride with mirrors despite having a legal obligation. On dirt roads and forest tracks, mirrors can actually pose a danger to riders. Imagine going past a tree and getting ‘clipped’ by a branch that throws off your balance. It’s quite real, as is the risk of crashing and breaking the mirrors all together.

Luckily, you can stop breaking dirt bike mirrors by taking them off completely and stowing them in your backpack or fender bag.

As for adventure motorcycles, you’ll definitely need to be fitted with mirrors when riding on the highways. However, the lonely stretches of dirt roads will find many riders taking these off.

When Racing Dirt Bikes

In some enduro racing environments, it’s sometimes mandated that you need to have mirrors. This is to stop accidents from happening as you’ll see dirt bike riders coming up from behind you and can overtake.

That said – this is quite rare and scrutineers generally don’t expect you to have mirrors attached. This is certainly the case in motocross where it’s almost laughable to have mirrors fitted.

Generally speaking, you will hear other dirt bikes coming up behind you so it’s unnessary to have mirrors fitted. You’ll get used to the sound of your own engine and the sound of other engines approaching at speed. A quick toot of the horn generally helps riders pass each other on the track or trails.

Keep in mind that at racing speeds, mirrors do become almost worthless as the constant bouncing means that you aren’t likely to clearly see anyone behind you. You’ll probably be more focused on the track ahead of you too and getting safely to the finish line.

Legal Consequences

While it’s a legal requirement to have mirrors fitted to dirt bikes when ridden at any time off private property, most dirt bike police won’t enforce these rules as they have more things to worry about. Even if you do get fined, the tickets you get are very low.

Such leniency is given since it’s not really practical to use dirt bike mirrors. However, you’ll still need to be registered and licenced for riding. If the police do pull you over, it generally won’t be for not using mirrors but rather for a licence and registration check.

If you’re touring the world, it’s recommended that you do use mirrors at all times. The fines and beaurocracy in these foreign countries can frustrate even the most seasoned ADV rider, especially when there are often bribes involved. It’s often not worth the headaches, though we do recommend fold-in mirrors and a spare set in the panniers.

In Summary

We wouldn’t fret about being caught without mirrors fitted to your dirt bike. The police often don’t care though so of the more zealous ones will. If in doubt – have them fitted but look for those that can easily bend.

There are simply more things to worry about out there on the tracks! Stay safe and keep it twisted!

RevZilla Unbiased Review: Are They Any Good?

Have you ever purchased from RevZilla? We recently bought some gear and wanted to share our unbiased review.

After all, you want to know if they’re worth buying from online or if there are cheaper alternatives available. If you search around, you’ll generally find discounts and coupons that will save you some dollars at checkout.

We don’t have a commercial relationship with RevZilla and don’t get paid anything. Thus, our reviews are unbiased as they come.

RevZilla Review

Have you been on RevZilla’s YouTube channel? It’s a complete guide motorcycling including what gear to buy and how to get started. For the experienced rider, there is plenty of content to help you get a better grasp of what product suits you best.

If you’re new to motorcycling, then RevZilla is the #1 place online to buy gear for your motorcycle. That includes parts and accessories, with just about every brand listed online…except (so far) for Frontaer. 😉

The company has a cult-like following for the 2-wheel crowd and looks after their customers very well. This is why you’ll typically see 5-star reviews online for RevZilla and it’s one company that has earned their reputation in the motorcycling world, based on enthusiastic riders aiming to make a difference.

What They’re Doing Well

One of the best things that RevZilla has going for themselves is their content generation. They’ll show you how to get started and the right type of gear for you. Similar to the advice you’d get from a typical dealership, this company just brings it to a whole new level.

RevZilla is a company who clearly strives to help customers have an excellent experience. This is why there is so much effort placed on crafting the perfect video and a highly optimized website.

That doesn’t end there, as you’re about to ask instant questions through their website. You’ll get a real person who knows the industry and can help you in the right direction.

Once you order, you’re regularly updated with shipping information and they use premium carriers to ensure your gear is delivered securely to your door. You’ll sometimes get some goodies such as stickers which are popular with th ekids.

Chances are you’ll get some emails from them in the future, yet they don’t blast your inbox with offers of little relevance. They generally learn what type of rider you are and deliver the right content to your inbox.

What Could Improve

Given their size and amount of staff on hand, the prices in RevZilla aren’t always the cheapest. This is why it pays to shop around. Then again, can you wait an extra few days to receive your goods from another marketplace? Probably not.

RevZilla has also become quite large that they cater for so many different styles of motorcycling. This means that they may have to find a particular staff who knows the answer to your particular problem. One of those cases of being too broad and not focused. If you’re an adventure rider, for instance, you’ll find a few online merchants who are fellow riders and know exactly what to advise at any given time.

Yet all in all, RevZilla still provides a stellar service and has the biggest range of motorcycling gear available in North America. While complete rivals to Amazon, it’s evident that you’ll get your gear and have the back up knowledge that they are truly guys behind 2-wheels.

In Summary

Will we continue ordering from RevZilla? Absolutely. Can we get better prices elsewhere? Sometimes, though the biggest range of gear is within RevZilla.

We look forward to the future where Frontaer is included in their adventure motorcycling lineup.

FortNine Canada Review: Are They Any Good?

Is FortNine any good? As a motorcycle store, they certainly seem to stock a lot of goods with riders purchasing plenty from them over recent months.

In this unbiased review, we’ll be providing our own thoughts about FortNine and whether you should be spending your hard-earned dollars with them.

Note: We have no commercial relationship with this company. Just like FortNine, we don’t get paid for online reviews.

Let’s begin.

FortNine Review

Have you shopped at FortNine before? Our experiences have been very good with packages delivered on time and constant follow-up via email.

As Canada’s leading motorcycle store, FortNine certainly stocks a great range of gear. Further still – they have recently launched their own range of motorcycling gear.

You’ll not only find gear for your motorcycle and dirt bike, but they also stock ATV and snowmobile gear. Clearly anyone who prefers the feeling of being behind the handlebars will enjoy what’s offered at this store.

What They’re Doing Well

Firstly – all the big brands are there…except for Frontaer. 😉

Chances are that you’ll find what you’re looking for in the store. Whether that’s luggage sets, accessories, luggage, mirrors or more.

In addition, their social media channels are excellent. We enjoy their YouTube channel and comedic twist. One thing you’ll find that’s rare in their product reviews is brutal honesty. If they come across an average-performing product, then the viewed certainly will know abou tit.

They have built their reputation on producing great content and helping the end user find what they’re looking for. This is why, when you search online, it’s not uncommon to come across their website…even if you live outside of Canada!

What Could Improve

To be honest…not much! Their free shipping bar has been lowered to $49 on most products. Their dirt biking range is extensive and you’ll find just about anything you need for the offroad enthusiast just like us.

Even adventure riders are taken care of with the range of Klim adventure touring jackets in store to keep you dry during those long and extended expeditions. The pricing isn’t always the cheapest but keep an eye out on their promotional emails with sale events.

We have found their text on their website a little harder to read but other than this…the reputation of Fort Nine is evident. They mean business.

Negative Reviews

Have you read negative reviews of FortNine? In the offroad motorcycling industry, it’s very difficult to keep everyone happen. Parcels get lost. Shipping gets delayed. Systems break.

This happens to every distributor, so keep in mind that 1-star reviews are more common while 5-star reviews are less likely to be found. People tend to only leave complaints much more than they leave praise.

Therefore, take these with a grain of salt. Fort Nine continues to improve their systems and reputation and for most people, the process from ordering to receiving and using is very straight forward.

In Summary

Will we continue to buy from FortNine? Sure. Do they always have the cheapest prices? Not quite. What they do have is a knowledable team and a very engaging YouTube channel which is rare in this industry.

If you’re looking for a company that lives and breathes motorcycling, then you’ve found the right place.

Ultimate Motorbikes Queensland: Are They Any Good?

Ultimate Motorbikes Gold Coast has several dealerships dealing with Kawasaki, KTM and Polaris. Are they still worth buying from nowadays?

We had that question recently and decided to go into the dealership to check them out first-hand. This review is based on our experiences as a customer with no bias as there is no commercial relationship with us and Ultimate Motorbikes.

Frontaer is a local ADV and dirt bike brand with its roots in the Gold Coast who are now taking on the world. We’re always keen to help local riders and our guides have already helped thousands around Queensland.

Btw the way: Did you know about the Gold Coast dirt riding spots? We recently wrote that guide to help you find great local places to ride.

Ultimate Motorbikes Queensland Review

Yes – this is a customer review of Ultimate Motorbikes. We’ll be as blunt as we want to be here based on a recent experience. No sugar coating this!

Ultimate Motorbikes Queensland Review

We’ve heard about the complaints surrounding most motorcycle shops. It’s hard to expect them to be perfect in what they do and often don’t have every conceivable part available in their range.

They have 4 stores in SEQ with 2 in the Gold Coast, one in Springwood and the other in West Ipswich.

Their history

What we like to audit is their operational history. When did they start? It’s difficult to trust a store that started yesterday as you aren’t sure if they will still be around in 6 months time.

Inside the Ultimate Motorbikes Queensland Dealership

They started more than 10 years ago and have built up quite a reputation across the Gold Coast and Brisbane. As authorised dealers for KTM, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Indian, Suzuki, Polaris, Moto Guzzi and Aprilla, you’ll find quite the range. No Hondas, unfortunately.

Social media channels

It’s important to consider what social media channels any dealership has. Some of them hardly update their Facebook account so you’re unsure if they’ve closed permanently.

Gloves and dirt bike apparel

In this case, Ultimate Motorcycles Instagram and Facebook pages are routinely updated and have a strong history. This is an indication that they seriously mean business and know where their customers are.

What’s on offer

Essentially you’ll find new and used motorbikes as well as apparel such as clothing and other merchandise. Beyond this you’ll find the spare parts and servicing department which is super helpful across all their stores.

Helmets in store

Yes, there are mild complaints but these often stem from them not having parts on hand. These might have to come from Sydney or Melbourne, or even overseas depending on your make/model/year of manufacture.

Alternatives

What alternatives do you have? Well, quite a few. These aren’t the only motorcycle dealership in Brisbane/Gold Coast but are certainly one of the better ones.

TeamMoto is one that we also like which compare favourably. In fact, it’s their main competitor. Another option is to buy parts online and fit them yourself but this is often slow and cumbersome.

We wouldn’t recommend buying privately as there is higher risks involved. Also, it’s just harder to get finance on a used motorcycle bought from an individual.

Final verdict on Ultimate Motorbikes

So then – should you spend your money with them? Based on customer experiences and reviews online, they’re clearly doing a great job!

Sure, not everyone is happy. Consider that there is a small minority of the motorcycling world that expects everything (and more) who are just generally quite negative. This is why we take complaints with a grain of salt as we don’t know the true story.

As for an established dealership with a wide range of bikes, gear and parts on offer, it’s hard to go past their reputation that has been built over the years.

Why American-Made Dirt Bikes Don’t Exist (Yet…)

Buying a dirt bike Made in America is something that we would all welcome in the offroad motorcycling community. After all, some countries in Europe produce their own bikes.

The reason why you won’t find dirt bikes or just about any motorcycle manufactured in America very straight forward:

Making dirt bikes locally is expensive due to high labor costs and upfront capital in order to bring a new line of motorcycles to the marketplace. Expense R&D plus compliance testing also must be done in order to be permitted to sell dirt bikes locally. In most cases, it’s simply cheaper to have dirt bikes manufactured overseas and shipped to America via cargo ship.

It’s this unprofitability at least for the first 5 to 7 years that really stops local companies from starting up. We’re too used to the big brands that newer brands aren’t trusted and aren’t proven for reliability, nor do they have massive parts availability.

Made in America dirt bikes

You’ll find the odd pit bike which is made locally and we’ve even found some YouTubers creating one-off models in their garages through parts they have sourced from eBay, but this is a rarity. To have a dirt bike manufactured at scale locally will require large factories, established supply chains, hundreds of staff and extensive marketing across trade shows and dealerships.

It wouldn’t surprise us if it took more than 50 million US dollars to bring a dirt bike to the marketplace that was manufactured locally. We also need to consider that Americans don’t mind buying dirt bikes which are manufactured in Japan or Europe, and even now – they don’t mind China either.

You’ll also have to consider the massive market-share that Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, Husqvarna and KTM have in the market. This share is extensive and hard to penetrate for many years to come, as they have proven themselves as rock-solid dirt bikes for the race track and weekend warrior.

Local vs Overseas Manufactured

When we consider the cost of imported dirt bikes which are between $5,000 and $16,000, it’s considered quite normal. If dirt bikes were Made in America, you can expect them to cost between $15,000 and $27,000 due to increased labor costs and marketing spend required to bring them to the marketplace.

Given the budget-conscious nature of most dirt bike riders, it’s understandable that this isn’t financially sustainable. Such high prices would last for a few years until the economies of scale take over and hard costs can be reduced while producing an excellent unit.

The low-cost nature of importing is one thing that keeps dirt bikes coming to North America by boat. It’s only about $150 to ship a dirt bike in a container when double-stacked from Europe, so this cost is very low and with established manufacturing plants in Europe and logistics in place, there isn’t much of a cost saving in this regard.

In Summary

American-Made dirt bikes don’t exist today though some manufacturers did attempt to come into the market in years gone by. Given the high setup costs, it’s just not financially sustainable unless someone has a large pool of investment behind them, and even so, the risks and payback period are too high.

Europe produces the very best motocross, adventure motorcycles and dirt bikes in the market and will continue to do so for many years to come. That said – China is coming out with some affordable yet high quality units that have attracted the attention of budget-conscious North American riders.

Should you want to support local manufacturers, spend your money in local dealerships for bikes, apparel, parts and servicing. This will help keep others in jobs and local economies flowing.
